A Kisii man returns to the village house he built 19 years ago, explains why he neglected it

  • Joshua Aura Acca built his house in Kisii before he turned 25, thinking that there would always be time to return home but it was not the case
  • Life took him to Isinya area, Kajiado, which became their regular home for family vacations, until a family tragedy reminded him that domestic affairs cannot wait forever.
  • The businessman was deeply moved when he returned to the home he had left for nearly two decades, a quiet lesson in ambition and family distance.

When Joshua Aura Acca built his first house in Kisii almost 20 years ago, he was still in his twenties, hardworking, with big dreams and youthful courage.

At an age when many of his peers were still searching for direction in life, Joshua was already investing in something permanent, laying the bricks for a future he believed would one day call him home.

He told TUKO.co.ke that although the house was built solidly, he did not live there much because life took him to Isinya, Kajiado, where it became a place to relax with his family from time to time.

Kisii, where the house stood patiently, saw Joshua only once every three to five years.

The building became a symbol of early success, but also the ups and downs of life kept him away from his home roots.

The distance became clear after the death of his father two weeks ago. As funeral preparations began, Joshua found himself facing the cost of neglect — not only financial, but also personal.

The house he built 19 years ago now needed urgent last-minute renovations to make it suitable for receiving mourners.

What should have been a place of comfort became a source of stress in an already painful time.

“East or West, home is home,” he said in reflection, the lesson he learned was not through theory but through tragedy, adding that the incident made him think deeply about himself.

They were also a symbol of returning not only to Kisii, but also to the idea that a house is home only when it is lived in, cared for and remembered.

For Joshua, the walls he built as a young man have finally “spoken” to him, reminding him and others who follow his story that no matter how far life takes you, home has a way of calling you back to where it matters most.
