During the ODM NEC meeting in Mombasa on Wednesday, February 11, Sifuna was removed from the powerful position due to allegations of misconduct.

The NEC expressed serious concern about the increasing levels of misconduct within the party, especially at the senior leadership level.
The committee emphasized that ODM is guided by its constitution, the rule of law and collective decision-making through its legally established bodies.

“The National Executive Council (NEC) expressed concern about the increasing levels of indiscipline within the party, especially within the top leadership positions. The committee emphasized that ODM is guided by the rule of law of the constitution and collective decision through its legally established bodies. After discussing issues related to the conduct of the Secretary General, Senator Edwin Sifuna, the NEC decided to remove him from office immediately, in accordance with the party’s constitution and applicable laws, with immediate effect,” the statement read.
In his place, the women’s representative of kiss Catherine Omanyo was appointed as the new acting secretary general.
The NEC decided that Omanyo, who is one of the deputy general secretaries, will occupy this position until a senior official is elected.
Sifuna has been leading a rebel group opposing ODM-UDA coalition talks ahead of the 2027 elections, adding to the friction within the 20-year-old party.
Earlier on Wednesday, Sifuna’s close allies, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, Kipkorir Menjo, an ODM politician from the Rift Valley, and Taita Taveta senator Johnes Mwaruma, were removed from the ODM NEC.

Earlier, the leader of the ODM party strongly criticized the general secretary for his recent public remarks on the party’s affairs.
During the ODM NEC meeting, Oburu reminded members that the party has officially started pre-election talks with the Democratic Union.
The Siaya senator publicly criticized the party’s officials opposing the resolutions issued by the party, saying it is wrong for them to hide behind democratic rights to undermine official decisions.
He wanted the discipline of the party to be achieved, stressing that although a few may express their opinion, the decisions of the majority should prevail.
Why did John Mbadi want Edwin Sifuna fired?
Cabinet Minister of National Treasury John Mbadi had revealed plans to expel Sifuna from the party.
Speaking at a church service in Migori county on February 8, Mbadi spoke about the growing division within the ODM party.
His remarks followed the launch of Linda Mwananchi’s visit to Sifuna, a move that clashed with Oburu’s Linda Ground meetings.
Mbadi criticized Sifuna’s rally in Busia on the same day, accusing him of divided loyalties and promoting the opposition’s agenda.
