Mombasa – The leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Oburu Oginga, has pushed some party officials to the wall in the run-up to the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the National Central Committee (NEC) meeting of ODM, Oburu reminded members that the party has officially started pre-election talks with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
“We do not quickly announce two-term issues. We are strengthening our party to prepare for negotiations. First we start with our current partners. As we continue, if we do not agree, we continue to talk with other existing groups. Or if there is no agreement with anyone, we can go on our own as ODM. I think that is the position of the party, and I am very happy,” Oburu said.

In his speech, Oburu criticized some of the party officials who have been publicly opposing the decisions made by the relevant party bodies.
According to Oburu, it is not right for the party’s senior leaders to hide behind democratic rights to oppose decisions passed through official channels.
“I am not at all happy that when we pass resolutions here, some members of this committee, some members of the Central Committee who are the policy makers of this party, come out and say the exact opposite of what we agreed on in the committee. It is right if other members of our party use their democratic rights to say what they want. But it is not right for me as a party leader to come from outside and raise my voice on something that was not agreed upon and which is my personal view, and then say it is my democratic right. If that is your democratic right, then there is chaos in the country Democracy does not mean chaos,” he said.
Oburu called for discipline within the party, saying democracy dictates that the minority will give their opinion, but the majority will decide.
He expressed his regret that the leaders attend important meetings of the party and later they openly oppose the agreed resolutions.
“The few have the right to speak, and the majority decides. That is why you hold elections. If you are on the side of the few, you follow what the majority has decided. That is the main basis of democracy that I want our party to follow, and I am disappointed that sometimes we come here, we agree, and then when we go out we say something else. I hope some of these issues will be discussed, and I hope our party will continue to be strong,” said the ODM leader.
Secretary General of ODM Edwin Sifuna he has been vocally opposing important party decisions regarding the 2027 election.
In particular, Sifuna opposes the ongoing pre-election coalition talks between ODM and the President’s camp William Ruto.
