Sports Kenya has broken silence over the poor state of the Kasarani Stadium pitch following criticism from Kenya.
Sports Kenya, the state agency responsible for managing stadia in the country, has commented on the state of Kasarani Stadium pitch.
Concerns were raised at the weekend ahead of the Nairobi United and Wydad Athletic CAF Confederation Cup game with the pitch in a poor condition.
Unlike the pristine playing surface that hosted matches during the 2024 African Championships (CHAN 2024) last August, what is there now is a pitch that has not been watered for long and has since changed its colour from green to almost brown.

The match went ahead nonetheless with Wydad winning 1-0 thanks to an 89th minute goal from Wissam Ben Yeddar but the pitch condition left a lot to be desired.
Sports Kenya, through the Kasarani Stadium X account, responded to the concerns.

”We apologize, we’ll do better and that’s why we’re closing for renovations,” it said.

Part of the problem is that the state body has a huge pending water bill with the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company that has seen water supply cut off from some of its facilities.
The pitch was, however, watered before kick off although it was too little too late as it had minimal impact on the playing surface.
Kasarani is among the facilities earmarked to host 2027 Africa Cup of Nations matches in Kenya and will soon be closed for further renovations.
