Nairobi: Mother of KMTC Student Allegedly Shot by Police Speaks Out

A tornado has struck a family in Huruma Estate, Nairobi county, following the murder of a 22-year-old student of the Institute of Medicine (KMTC).

The young woman, identified as Sheryl Achieng’, was allegedly shot in the head by a police officer, killing her instantly.

The incident on Saturday, February 8, sparked anger among residents, who came out on the streets demanding justice for the young woman.

What did Sheryl Achieng’s mother say?

Achieng’s heartbroken mother could not contain her pain as she tearfully spoke about her daughter’s death.

“She was about to finish her exams. I was not at my fish shack when this happened. I just received a call from my neighbor saying Sheryl had been shot. I asked if she had stolen anything from anyone. She told me they had shot her at our fish shack,” the woman said with tears in her eyes.

The grieving mother insisted that her daughter had not committed any crime, adding that if she had been a man, they might have claimed that she was a thief, but her daughter was only washing fish.

He ran to the scene in great pain, and found blood on the spot where his daughter had died.

With great sadness, he demanded justice for his daughter while they shared the big dreams they had for the future.

“I just want justice for my daughter. She used to tell me to be patient for four years when she finishes her studies, so that I can go live in the village while she stays in the city, struggling to support her younger siblings,” said Achieng’s mother.

The angry residents blamed the police for negligence and mentioned the name of the officer they believe committed the sad act.

Many claimed that it was not the first time that the officer had killed innocent locals in the area and called for the relevant authorities to take action.

“A police officer known as Abdul is known for killing innocent youths. He has done it again today. There is another one called Stano, and they should be fired. If not, we will destroy everything,” said one resident.

How was a KMTC student shot in Huruma?

Achieng’ used to wash and fry fish in his mother’s hut, hoping to make a sale, as it was their source of livelihood.

Tragically, an unintended bullet hit him in the head when the officer opened fire on a suspected burglar they were pursuing.

He helped his mother in the hut on weekends to earn money for school fare and lunch. During the protest that, the residents closed the main road and lit a fire before setting three parked buses and several huts on fire, demanding that the authorities be held accountable.

The Independent Police Investigation Authority (IPOA) later arrived at the scene to begin an investigation, after the family was initially denied the opportunity to submit information about the incident at the Mercy Police Station.
