On Sunday, February 8, protest broke out in Huruma Street, Nairobi County following the controversial killing of Cheryl Odhiambo, 21.

The student of the Medical Training Institute (KMTC) died inside his mother’s fish hut after he was shot in the eye by armed police officers who were chasing the criminal.

The incident plunged Huruma into violence and chaos that continued throughout the night until Sunday afternoon.

“I had gone to visit my child at school when I received a phone call and was informed that my daughter had been killed. I have left my daughter in the hands of the government. I do not want to know how she will be transported home for the funeral, how her case will continue, or if she will get justice. I have left the government,” said Caroline Akinyi, the mother of the deceased.

Police confirmed that the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the incident, with officers pledging full cooperation.

“Following the incident, a breach of law and order has been witnessed in the area, with reports of two vehicles being set on fire today. We assure the public that a full documentation and accountability process for this incident is ongoing,” the NPS said.

President William Ruto criticized his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, about plans to revive the coalition of Declaration of Unity One Kenya Coalition Party before the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Sunday, February 8, the president said that the opposition coalition does not pose any threat to his bid for re-election in 2027.

Ruto he dismissed Uhuru’s new efforts to reorganize Azimio, saying that the coalition has no political weight without its main subsidiary Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

According to Ruto, the opposition should prepare for a tough fight in the next general election.
