The former President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) officially joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) of Gachagua, a move that became known after he was seen with the leader of the party in his Lavington offices in Nairobi.
Dressed as a DCP, Havi’s presence marked his official entry into the political party positioning himself as an alternative home for like-minded politicians.
Gachagua welcomed Havi into the party, identifying him as a great asset for the long-term aspirations of the DCP, especially in the legislative and public administration work.
In a statement shared on his social networks, the former deputy president said the party was interested in attracting experienced professionals capable of strengthening Parliament and promoting accountability.
He noted that the DCP needed “great legal elites” to uphold its agenda and said he was happy to have Havi, whom he described as one of the country’s top lawyers, in their ranks.
“The DCP party needs good lawyers for legislation, representation and management. I am happy to welcome Nelson Havi SC, one of the best lawyers in the country to walk with us in his efforts to represent the people of Westlands state in the National Assembly. The DCP party is a home for development professionals who aspire to political leadership,” Gachagua wrote.
What did Gachagua promise Havi?
Havi later confirmed the development during an interview on NTV Kenyarevealing that talks with Gachagua culminated in an agreement that would see him pursue the Westlands seat under the DCP banner.

He said Gachagua publicly introduced him as the party’s candidate in the state, adding that their participation was based on negotiation rather than coercion.
Havi stressed that he was open to party nominations if the need arose, expressing confidence in his political appeal on ethnic lines.
“Look at his Twitter page. He said this is our candidate for Westlands. He is in Calcas. We have entered into negotiations. We have reached an agreement. If there is a need to give all candidates a nomination, I will volunteer for the nomination. And you will be surprised, my popularity exceeds my background as a Mluhya,” Havi revealed.
From his experience during the election LSK of 2020, Havi said that his supporters are coming from different areas, noting that his biggest support at that time came from Mount Kenya and Ukambani instead of his Waluhya backyard.

According to the lawyer, the results showed that voters from different communities were ready to support candidates they believed had the ability and vision.
How many votes did Havi get in 2022?
Havi’s move marks a new push to run for office after a period of political adjustment following the 2022 General Election.
In the 2022 polls, he ran for the Westlands parliamentary seat on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket but was defeated by long-serving ODM MP Tim Wanyonyi.
Wanyonyi won the seat with about 58,400 votes, while Havi finished a distant second with about 19,500 votes.
Following that defeat, Havi’s relationship with the UDA deteriorated further and in November 2024, he resigned from the party, stating that his decision was guided by consultation with Westlands residents and their expectations of his political future.
His departure fueled speculation about his next move, especially after he hinted at the possibility of working with ODM at one point.
