Since the signing of the Cooperation Agreement between ODM and the Democratic Alliance (UDA) in early 2025, some members have publicly announced their support for the re-election of the President William Ruto.

Why are ODM members arguing?

The members, including some party leaders, claim that they have been in the opposition for a very long time and will not return to the streets, while others show fatigue due to protest from time to time.

However, the opposition group has been insisting that the MoU was signed to help the president bring stability to the government by implementing the 10-point agenda agreed by both parties.

The opponents, including Sifuna, have been insisting that ODM should nominate a presidential candidate to oppose Ruto in the next election.

They also accused the president of being slow in implementing the agenda despite the approaching deadline.

What will make ODM remain in the opposition?

ODM leader Senator Oburu Oginga confirmed efforts to unite the party by resolving internal conflicts.

However, Sifuna, who is also a Nairobi senator, seems to have completely distanced himself from supporting the president.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday, February 3, Sifuna insisted that supporting Ruto would be a sure way for the party to end up in opposition, claiming the ‘Wantam Movement’ would continue well.

“When you are given the vote, no one will be there to force you to make a decision. I hear them saying that they are tired of being in the opposition. The surest way for ODM to end up in the opposition is to get confused with William Ruto, because he is coming home. I will vote against him and remain in the party,” he said, emphasizing how the party expelled the former city governor, Evance Kidero.

On a personal level, he also confirmed that he will not vote for the current head of state.

Will Ruto win the 2027 general election?

His remarks came a few days after Ruto announced that he would win the election by a margin of between two million and three million votes.

The President expressed the need for a solid strategy to ensure victory, stressing that his administration has good marks and plans to transform the country.

His party was more proud that it has already registered more than 12,000 candidates seeking to be elected in the 2027 elections.

Several leaders from Nyanza region have also expressed interest in the party’s ticket before the upcoming elections.
