The declaration came following a high-level meeting with Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, aimed at addressing growing concerns about the safety and security of opposition leaders.
Gachagua’s previous visit to Othaya, in Nyeri County, ended in violence at the Witima ACK Church, which saw police and masked men storming the church.
According to witnesses of the incident, tear gas was placed inside the church, leaving the worshipers, including children, in fear for more than 30 minutes.
Gachagua, who was the chief guest, was rushed out the back door and forced to run through a fence, escaping what he later described as an assassination attempt.
Will Gachagua return to organize a meeting in Othaya?
In a statement after the meeting with Kanja, Gachagua accused the police of collaborating with thugs to plan the attack.
He described the incident as a sign of a culture of indifference and warned that such actions directly endanger Kenya’s democracy.
The former Deputy President complained about what he called the inaction of the police to deal with criminals who have been disrupting opposition meetings.
“Several Kenyans have lost their lives to thugs and the police and no action seems to be taken despite these criminals being known. We will not accept it. Kenya is bigger than any of us, whether in power or otherwise. We will return to Othaya Town this weekend and we will not bow down to anyone as people who united to liberate our Nation,” Gachagua said on Friday, January 30.
