Winnie Odinga Refuses to Reveal Her Last Conversation with Raila: “It’s Disrespectful”

Winnie, who is also the midwife in the Odinga family, was with Raila in all his pain in Kerala, India.

Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday, January 27, Winnie said their conversation was very private and sharing it publicly would be disrespectful.

“It was very personal, and I feel if I say it openly I will be disrespecting him. Not every conversation we had was for the public,” he said.

He remembered the long conversation he had with Raila the night before his death, where they discussed everything.

“The night before he died, we sat in his room for two hours discussing everything. There are many people who can now say the leader of the party said this or that, and I feel it is not their responsibility to bring it forward, whether they believe it or not. I feel it is a lack of respect for that event. I feel it is disrespecting the deceased, and I do not think it is right for me to discuss it,” he explained.

Continuing Raila’s legacy

The MP said he wants to honor his father’s legacy by continuing to improve the lives of many people, continue the vision of Raila and his grandfather, and dedicate himself to that mission.

However, responding to the conflicts within the ODM party, Winnie said members are being harassed and some are losing their chairmanship for supporting him.

“We have reached a situation where you are told to fill in a form to show if you support the current government. If you do, you will be given TSC positions; if you don’t, God knows what happens,” he demanded.

Amidst reports and confirmation that the party would support a general arrangement until 2027, Winnie reiterated the opposition’s position that ODM has never been left out of government and should field a presidential candidate.

He also denied the emerging claims of some leaders that Raila had secret talks with them about the future of the party, saying that the opposition leader expressed his views in public.

Did Raila warn against endorsing Ruto?

At the same time, in his last meeting with ODM leaders, Raila firmly stated that the party has not adopted any resolutions apart from expressing commitment to see the implementation of the ODM-UDA MoU.

He warned members against endorsing the President William Rutosaying that such issues have not been discussed.

The former prime minister also said that the Orange Party will follow the law to decide whether it will compete with Ruto in the next election.
