Riyan Muyoti was injured by fireworks at home after his mother sent him to find his school shoes in preparation for the opening of school.
How did the accident happen?
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Auma recounted the shocking moment when she found her son in an unimaginable state after hearing a loud explosion.
“I was sitting in the living room making some uniforms because the students were about to go back to school. I was watching the news while I was there. My son passed by and I asked him where his school shoes were. I ordered him to look for them, if possible in the room. When he left my sight, I thought he had gone to look for those shoes.

Moments later, I heard a loud explosion. I stopped what I was doing and immediately ran to the room to see what happened. I was not prepared for what I found. I had no idea,” he said.
When he got to the room, he found his son soaked in blood, with half of his mouth damaged following the fatal accident.
Riyan rushed to the hospital
He panicked when he looked at his son, who had lost his teeth and part of his jaw after a firework exploded in his mouth.
“I shouted. His brother, who had gone to visit my wife, came running immediately. He looked at his younger brother and was shocked. He picked him up, covered his face with a cloth, and ran outside to find a boda boda to take him to the hospital.
When they arrived at the hospital, Riyan’s condition was too bad for the center to handle, and he was taken to another hospital. An ambulance was called, and we were taken to the referral hospital. Before we left, the doctor asked Riyan what happened. He said it was fireworks, although he could not speak well,” he noted.
How much does Riyan need for surgery?
At the referral hospital, Riyan was admitted and underwent surgery the next day before being transferred to the ICU, where he stayed for four days.
He was later transferred to the ward, where he remains as the family struggles to raise funds for further surgery.
“He needs five surgeries. We need more than KSh 500,000. He needs metal implants for his penis, lower jaw. The doctors said they can’t do the surgery for free. The amount is too much, and even my Social Health Authority (SHA) insurance is not enough. We need urgent help,” he cried.
