Ali was nominated in October 2025 by President Yoweri Museveni, which led to a debate about his eligibility to run due to his poor health.

In the previous election of the ruling party NRM, the long-time leader held the party flag with 8,609 votes, while his nearest rival got 4,492 votes.

Activists and human rights defenders filed a petition in the Constitutional Court to remove his appointment, saying that his age and poor health make him unable to represent his community properly.

However, despite the criticism, his supporters said the 2026 election was a sign of farewell to a man who served the country through war and nation building since the 1960s.

They said that his long service record and his great support for Adjumani West show that he can still deliver.
