Kisii County mourns the death of Ezra Babayao Obiero, a father whose life was full of love, faith and dedication to his family before it took a tragic turn.

Those who knew him remember him as a loving, dedicated man whose world revolved around his wife and their two young children.

Ezra met his wife when they were fresh out of school, full of hopes and dreams, going through adulthood together.

Their relationship grew quickly, and in 2018 they got married in a joyous ceremony that marked the beginning of their journey together built on faith.

In 2020, the couple welcomed their first child and named him Sifa, a symbol of their deep faith as active members of the Adventist church.

The young family was often seen in church activities, with their little son accompanying them to choir practice while they served together.

When did Ezra’s wife die?

Two years later, the couple happily prepared to welcome their second child. However, in April 2023, tragedy struck.

Ezra’s wife had complications during childbirth and died. The baby lived, but Ezra came home from the hospital with the baby in his arms.

His death at the age of 28 left the young family devastated.

Suddenly, Ezra found himself the single father of two children under the age of three, a role he accepted firmly, despite the deep sadness that burdened him.

Friends recall that he was open about his struggles with grief, repeatedly saying how much the incident had hurt him.

He was described as tired, overwhelmed, and emotionally drained.

Several people close to her said she repeatedly expressed that she was not coping, and despite their efforts to help her, the severity of her grief was evident.

This week, almost three years after the death of his wife, Ezra also passed away. The family and the community are now facing a second serious tragedy with the fate of his two young children, who are now left without both parents.

Church associates, friends and neighbors have joined in mourning, remembering Ezra not for his final struggle, but for the love he had for his family and the dedication he showed in his early years as a husband and father.

Many have expressed surprise and sadness, saying that her grief was visible for years, but the depth of her pain may not have been fully understood.

As the community comes together to support these children and extended families, one question continues to ache in hearts: what will happen next for the remaining young children?

Their future is now in the hands of the family and the community that decided to stand with them.

Ezra and his wife have left behind a story of love, faith and heartache.
