A day ago, Ian and his mother, Rehema Brenda, stood outside the school gates with nothing more than a bag and a blanket for their son, hoping that someone, somewhere, would help him keep his dream alive.

How Ian found the opportunity that was eluding him

A widowed mother from Githurai 45 told TUKO.co.ke that after his story spread, an outpouring of generosity ensured Ian was safe in class, in uniform, registered, and ready to start his high school journey.

Donations were sent directly to the school’s account, ensuring transparency and allowing Brenda to focus on her son’s emotional and academic preparation.

“The money went directly to the school, so we’ll settle the account later,” he explained, looking relieved. “But from what we’ve been told, that amount should be enough to cover Ian’s fees for the year.”

The relief in his voice was unmistakable. For a woman who had carried the weight of four children on a meager income, the moment felt strange.

What score did Ian get on the 9th Grade test?

Just a few days ago, he had held back tears as he made a public appeal, hoping that his son’s efforts would not be wasted due to financial constraints.

Today, he is inspired by the kindness shown by complete strangers, proof that even in difficult times, the spirit of solidarity among Kenyans remains strong.

When the story was shared online, many were impressed by his 59 marks, an indication of his ability to stay in the classroom.

However, even with this good start, Brenda and her followers are well aware that the journey is far from over.

Why Ian needs a scholarship

Although the first year’s fees appear to be covered, the family is now applying for a full scholarship to cover Ian’s education for the next three years.

According to social media personality Being Wendy, who first shared the case, the goal is to prevent any disruption to her learning and give her the stability she needs to succeed academically.

“We are very grateful for what Kenyans have done,” said Wendy. “But we’re still looking for a scholarship to make sure Ian stays in school until Form Four. I don’t want him to start and then be kicked out later because of money.”

The scholarship would not only cover tuition fees but also help with school supplies, uniforms, transportation, and any additional expenses that may arise over the next three years.

Ian’s hope for the future

Other well-wishers echo his sentiments, noting that while emergency aid has addressed the immediate crisis, long-term planning is essential.

For now, however, Brenda and Ian are celebrating a victory, a victory that would not have been possible without the compassion of the many people who chose to act when they heard their story.
