Alex was seriously injured in a rugby game as a form four student at Kericho Boys High School in 2015.

The injury affected his spine and forced him to be hospitalized for months, which prevented him from participating in the national exams that year.

His father, Musa Lang’at, recalled the difficult moment when he saw his son lying in bed, unsure of his future life.

“I received a call from his school, and the teachers said that my son was injured. He was already hospitalized, and what I witnessed broke my heart,” said Lang’at.

Kipkurui explained that his family faced major financial challenges, not only to pay for his treatment, but also to ensure that he continues with his treatment.

Lang’at sold part of their farm to finance his son’s treatment, which left them with serious financial challenges.

“I was supposed to visit the doctor at least twice a week, but since the accident, we were only able to do that for the first year. After that, we couldn’t continue because of financial challenges,” said Kipkurui.

To help him continue his treatment at home, his family bravely struggled and built a small temporary building, which Kipkurui still uses today.

Did Kipkurui go back to school?

While fighting to regain the ability to walk, Kipkurui pursued his dream of one day sitting the KCSE exams and pursuing a career in computer science.

In 2025, he enrolled as a special student, registered for the Borborwet Secondary exams, and spent the whole year studying at home in preparation for the national exams.

His efforts and hard work paid off when he got a grade that allowed him to join the university directly.

However, Kipkurui expressed concern about the future, as his parents are getting old and still have other children to raise.

“My dream is to study computer science, but at the moment there is a problem with the internet. We don’t have Wi-Fi, and I don’t have a computer to use at school. Online studies would be better for me due to my situation,” he said.

Kipkurui hopes to get a scholarship that will not only help his education but also give him the opportunity to walk again.
