A journalist has sadly died while reporting on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Which journalist died in AFCON 2025?
Mohamed Soumaré was found dead in his hotel room on Wednesday morning in his hotel room, causing the media to mourn.
Soumare was in the North African country where he was expected to report the semi-finals and finals of the tournament.
He was a prominent figure in sports journalism in Mali and served as Stade Malien’s press officer.
“Malian sports journalist Mohamed Soumaré has died this morning in Rabat, Morocco, where he was covering the AFCON 2025 tournament. He served as the press officer of Stade Malien and the marketing, television and media manager of the Professional League of Mali,” read a post from Nuhu Adams, a journalist in Morocco.

Tributes have poured in from fellow writers and fans as they mourned Soumare. Instant Foot said,
“The entire Instant Foot team extends its deepest condolences to his family, to his colleagues and colleagues, as well as to all his loved ones.”
Cupid Football it said,
“We offer our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues and colleagues, and to all who loved and respected him.”
Sadick Adams said,
“Wow! My friend, may God have mercy on his soul. The greatest historian of the African game is gone.”
Assets in AFCON 2025
Soumare and other Malian citizens suffered another heart attack AFCON after being eliminated in the quarter-finals by Senegal.
They lost 1-0 to Teranga Lions thanks to a first half goal from Iliman Ndiaye and extended the Eagles’ wait for the first AFCON title.
Tom Saintfiet’s team had finished second in Group A behind Morocco after drawing all their games. They met Tunisia in the Round of 16, where the game was decided by penalties after the match.

They played both the Round of 16 and quarter-finals with 10 men after red cards for Woyo Coulibaly and Yves Bissouma, respectively.
“I am proud of them for the performance they showed, not only in today’s match but in all the competitions. We have shown the world what we are made of. Together with my staff, we will analyze our matches and see what we can do better in the future,” said their head coach, Saintfiet, after their removal.
The fake pastor who promised Mali the AFCON title was arrested
Back in the capital of Mali, Bamako, the priest who had promised the team the AFCON title was arrested for fraud.
An angry mob gathered at the home of an indigenous healer, identified as Karamogo Sinayogo, after their defeat by Senegal, before the police intervened and arrested him.
It is said that the priest collected more than KSh 5 million.
