Nairobi – General Secretary of the Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Francis Atwoli has joined the debate about how former prime minister Raila Odinga lost the 2022 presidential election.

There have been mixed feelings within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) about the people who contributed to Raila’s defeat in the 2022 elections.
Did Uhuru Kenyatta contribute to Raila’s defeat in 2022?
ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna publicly blamed National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, saying he mismanaged the campaign funds given by the former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
But speaking on Citizen TV on Wednesday, January 7, Atwoli claimed Uhuru contributed significantly to Raila’s failed presidential bid.
The journalist wanted to know Atwoli’s opinion on who was responsible for Raila’s defeat, and he answered emphatically, saying that it was Uhuru.
“Dad’s sponsor is responsible for losing Dad. Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely,” Atwoli said.
Atwoli claimed that Uhuru never called a meeting with people who were on the front line to campaign for Raila, despite supporting his cause.
He also pointed out that the former president may have hidden the millions of money he promised to finance the presidential bid of the late former prime minister.
Can Uhuru give Fred Matiang’i victory?
Atwoli further warned former Home Affairs Minister Fred Matiang’i against relying on Uhuru’s support before the 2027 General Election.
“Uhuru seemed to support Baba, but at no time did he call a meeting with people who were in the front line to campaign for Raila. Now I hear that he wants Matiang’i to be president. If Matiang’i is not careful with his own actions, Uhuru will not make him president. If he did not make Raila, how can he make Matiang’i president?” he asked.
The veteran trade unionist claimed that even with the constitutional amendment allowing Uhuru Kenyatta to run for a third term, he could not defeat the President William Ruto.

“And now, for now, let the constitution be amended as some people are suggesting. I do not support the amendment of the constitution. But if the constitution is amended now, Uhuru will be free to run for the presidency again. And I can tell you freely, he cannot defeat William Ruto,” he said.
Did Junet contribute to Raila Odinga’s defeat in 2022?
In a related development, the General Agency of the Union of Declaration of Unity One Kenya Coalition Saitabato Ole Kanchory blamed the Suna East MP for Raila’s defeat.
In a Twitter series on Sunday, January 4, Kanchory said Junet has no moral authority to talk about how Raila lost the 2022 election.
According to the ironic politician, Junet alone cost Azimio the presidency, and that even Raila died knowing that.
