AFCON 2025: Why the FBI came to watch the match between Algeria and DR Congo in Morocco

Algeria needed a last-minute goal from Adil Boulbina to see off the Democratic Republic of Congo and advance to the quarter-finals.

The game was played at the packed Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat and it has now emerged that FBI agents were part of the security team.

FBI agents camping in Morocco

The agents arrived in Morocco over the weekend as part of a mission to gather information on how local authorities are handling security issues at the tournament.

The agents, who were from January 4 to 6, are led by Douglas Olsan, Director of Operations of the Intervention Services Division, and Kevin Kowalski, Deputy Director of the Emergency Response Group.

Le 360 ​​reports that the task of the team was to see and learn about the security and public safety protocol implemented by the Directorate General of National Security during the AFCON 2025.

The tour is understood to have started on January 4 when Morocco won it Tanzania in the field of Prince Moulay Abdellah.

Why FBI agents landed at AFCON 2025

The team is interested in a number of issues, including security surveillance, the use of visual surveillance systems with drones and high-resolution cameras, investigating communications and electronic coordination between security forces through fixed and mobile command centers.

They also visited the African Security Cooperation Center which is the link between Morocco’s security interests and the AFCON teams.

The agents are on a mission to find the truth before the 2026 World Cup, which this year the United States will host along with Mexico and Canada.

“The visit falls within the framework of the US team’s desire to explore the success and excellence of the Moroccan system in hosting major sporting events,” says part of the report.

The agents had front seats to the rhythm stage in Rabat as Algeria and DR Congo went into extra time.

When the game was about to be decided by a penalty, Boulbina came off the bench and scored a shot to send the Desert Foxes to the 8th Round.

The 2019 champions will now play with Nigeria in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Marrakech.

Algeria have yet to concede a goal in Morocco, while Nigeria are one of the top scorers.
