According to the police, the evening accident involved a Tahmeed Coach bus and a matatu driven by Naekana Sacco.
The matatu was traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa, while Tahmeed’s bus was heading in the other direction, from Mombasa to Nairobi.
The impact of the accident was huge, killing six passengers on the spot as Mukaa Sub County Police Commander Hussein Abduba confirmed the incident.
He said the matatu driver tried to overtake several vehicles on the road, a move that resulted in death within seconds.
He explained that the matatu was passing the truck when the bus suddenly appeared, leaving the driver with little or no chance to avoid the accident.
The two vehicles collided head-on, causing extensive damage and trapping several passengers inside.
Emergency response teams from Muumandu and Kyumbi were quickly dispatched to the area that had turned into a chaos zone.
Rescue operations continued into the night as rescuers struggled to rescue the injured and find the bodies of the dead.
Due to the severity of the accident, some of the victims suffered multiple injuries, requiring careful extrication from the wreckage of the vehicle.
