Talk of the gang first surfaced on social media, but residents soon confirmed that the threats were real, continuing in their neighborhoods.
With the young victims suffering serious injuries and stab wounds, residents of Kisii have witnessed the brutality of the gang.
The most affected areas include Two Bridges, Nyanchwa, Gekomu, Jogoo, Upper Hill, Mosocho, Capital Roundabout, Mwembe, One Bridge, and Egesa.
One of the first confirmed deaths occurred in the Rogoo region, marking the beginning of a wave of attacks.
The gang’s system of riding around on black motorbikes with a white number plate, often without the number plate, has made identification and tracking difficult.
For residents like Zipporah Bonareri in Upper Hill, fear has become a part of daily life, saying that even businesses have had to change their routines. “This area is dangerous. We used to close our businesses at 3 p.m. Now our businesses close at 7 p.m., very early. We have problems here. People are killed like cattle. Someone leaves work at 7 p.m., and instead of returning home safely, he is killed,” he said.
What are the tactics of the Kisii criminal gang?
Phaminus Ongera, 23, narrowly escaped death in Upper Hill, Egesa, a suburb on the outskirts of Kisii town.
The Kisii Polytechnic graduate recounts being attacked at around 2pm by four youths armed with swords, knives, and iron rods.
“It was around two o’clock at night. I met those young men by the river; one had a machete, another had an iron, and the other a knife. Their goal was to steal my phone. So when I asked where they were taking my phone, the one in front hit me with a machete, I think here (he points to the side of his head near his eye). Looking back, the one behind also stabbed me in the leg four times…It got to the point where I fell and found myself in the hospital,” Ongera recounts.
In Nyanchwa, the gang is reported to operate aggressively, sometimes even attacking some of their victims near the police station.
John Omari, another victim, recounted how he was grabbed by the neck during the attempted robbery, adding that his calls for help went unanswered.
