Nakuru Accident: 5 People Killed, Several Injured After Trailer Hits Three in Kikopey

Nakuru – At least five people have been confirmed dead following a fatal accident on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

The accident on the morning of Saturday, January 3, involved three of Great Rift Shuttle PSV and trailer at Kikopey area in Gilgil.

How did the road accident in Kikopey happen?

According to the police report, the trailer lost control shortly before hitting a 14-seater matatu with registration number KCS 317M heading towards Bungoma.

Preliminary investigation shows that there was another truck in front of the matatu at the time of the accident, causing the public service vehicle to get stuck between the two trucks.

“It involved a Beiben truck (UAY 036P/UAY 696P), a Toyota Hiace (KCS 317M) tricycle operated by Great Rift Shuttle, and a Mercedes Actros (KAY 648Y/ZC 7054). All the vehicles were traveling from Gilgil to Nakuru, and the drivers of the Beiben truck and the tricycle were not found at the scene. The Beiben truck failed to keep a safe distance and hit the rear of the tricycle, pushing it into the a parked Mercedes Actros,” the police report said.

Gilgil Sub County Police Commander Winsone Mwakio confirmed the incident, saying five passengers died on the spot.

The police report indicated that several other passengers suffered serious injuries in the multi-vehicle accident and have been rushed to hospital.

“As a result of the accident, five (5) passengers traveling in the matatu died on the spot, while several others sustained serious injuries. The injured were rushed to Gilgil Sub-County Hospital and St. Joseph Mission Hospital for treatment, where they are reported to be in critical condition,” the police report said.

Witnesses described the accident as very bad, with the matatu badly damaged and fear growing due to many casualties.

Motorists have been advised to be careful along the highway as traffic continues due to the accident.

Emergency responders and traffic authorities are on the scene, controlling the flow and helping the victims.
