Nairobi – Fear has gripped the South C area in Nairobi county after a building that was being built collapsed on Friday, January 2.

In a statement on X, the Kenya Red Cross said the building collapsed early this morning at the South C Shopping Centre, causing panic among nearby residents and passers-by.
Are there any casualties in the event of the collapse of the building on South C street?
The building, which is reported to be 16 stories tall, collapsed suddenly, sending heavy clouds of dust into the air and scattering debris in nearby streets.
Shops and residents in the surrounding area were forced to evacuate due to security concerns.

The police confirmed the tragic incident, but have not yet determined the number of casualties. A multi-agency response team has already been dispatched to the area.
“A multi-agency emergency response team had been dispatched to the scene and was fully managing the situation,” the Kenya Red Cross said.

Responding to the sad incident, some Kenyans, including Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, blamed the administration of Governor John Sakaja.
Many questioned why the county planning department was approving the construction of high-rise buildings in residential areas.

“The chaos we are allowing. The one person who is destroying Nairobi is the Chief Planning Officer. I hope that one day he will be in jail for all these crimes related to unplanned development and even billboards. All under him directly.”

How did the building kill the students of Emmanuel New Life Learning Center?
In another tragic incident, two students at the Emmanuel New Life Learning Center died on October 6, 2025.
On the afternoon of Monday, October 6, at approximately 12:45 pm, construction debris from a neighboring building fell onto the school grounds, hitting four PP2 students while they were washing their hands during lunch break.
According to the police report, two children died on the spot, while the other two were rushed to the Uwezo Clinic before being taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital, where they were admitted in critical condition.
