Is ODM happy in Ruto’s government?

In his speech, Oburu reminded ODM supporters that the party did not support Ruto in the 2022 General Election, but ensured that its strength was behind Raila.

“In this government where we are now, we entered through the window, because we did not vote for Ruto. We are in government, and we do not like to be there. We cooperate under this broad agreement with a specific agenda of 10 points which was accepted,” said Oburu.

He added that ODM’s participation in the government is basically strategic and is guided by the need to achieve the agreed reforms, not political pleasures.

Oburu noted that the party’s priority is still to strengthen its ground systems before the 2027 General Election to increase its political strength.

What Wandayi said about the ODM coalition talks Energy Minister Opiyo Wandayi, who also attended the church service, urged ODM members to maintain unity and respect the party’s institutions.

He said that he has a moral responsibility to guide the party’s supporters during what he called a sensitive transition period.

Wandayi warned that there are ongoing efforts within the party to weaken Oburu’s authority, claiming some members are already participating in coalition talks early before 2027 without involving the party leader.

According to CS, such actions violate the ODM Constitution.

“He is the one who is given the authority to lead the party and its members in negotiations to create alliances. That is his responsibility. He does not need to share that authority with anyone else,” said Wandayi.

He cited Article 16 of the ODM Constitution, which gives the authority to negotiate alliances to the party leader alone.

Wandayi also advised that once Oburu completes the direction of the coalition, whether before or after the election, he only needs to be approved by the National Central Committee.

He emphasized that the coalition talks should be finalized early so that the party can move forward with clarity about who they support and what political agreement has been reached.
