3. The Standard

The newspaper reported on the differences between those who celebrate Christmas.

Thousands of Kenyans across the country are celebrating Christmas today, with the stark divide between rich and poor becoming more apparent, showing the two faces of the festive season.

While some Kenyans celebrate the day with pomp and pageantry, others have had to endure the cold in makeshift shelters, struggling to find basic needs, including food.

When the sun rose, the modern areas of Nairobi were filled with the sweet smell of meat, baked breads and wine from the mansions decorated with flowers, lights and Christmas trees hung from the ceiling.

In these parts, Christmas is ‘party time’, a season of merriment, fun and family gatherings until late at night.

At home and in other parts of the country, Christmas lacks flavor and excitement.

Residents have sought shelter at a primary school in Sitet, Narok County, after being evicted by the recent violence.

The air smelled of smoke from fires lit outside classrooms where women cooked light porridge to feed children who had not had enough to eat for days. At night, the cold was killing them.

Light blankets were distributed among families, while some children huddled around their mothers for warmth after queuing for more porridge.

For these families, Christmas will pass like any other day; no gifts, special meals, new clothes for the kids, or travel plans or party tables.

Instead, anxious talk about when it will be safe to return and how long they will have to stay in places that are not suitable for evacuees.

In the poverty-stricken villages of Kibera, Mathare and other streets, Christmas night tells a very different story.

Children are looking eagerly at shops they will not enter, while parents are worried about how they will feed their children today.

This disparity, which highlights the growing gap between rich and poor in Kenya, is sure to be evident during the festive season.

For many, Christmas is a reminder of what they lack rather than a celebration of what they have.
