As many commuters head to rural areas to escape the city’s congestion, traffic jams have become a common occurrence, especially on busy roads.

One example, seen in a popular clip, occurred on the Nakuru–Salgaa–Mau Summit Road.

The footage showed long-haul buses, shuttles, trucks, and private cars stuck in queues.

What did the passengers do in Salgaa?

Since the traffic was at a standstill, the drivers turned off their engines while waiting for it to open, while the passengers entertained themselves.

Some got down from their buses and cars and started singing and dancing.

Those with speakers played Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) songs, and everyone sang happily as they continued to go around in a circle.

Others looked on in amazement.

The queue affected not only those leaving Nairobi, but also those heading to the capital.

What caused the Salgaa queue?

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) warned Kenyans on December 20 of a significant increase in traffic volume.

They specifically highlighted the congestion on the Nairobi-Nakuru Road and explained the reasons.

“Traffic has caused congestion in various parts of the road, largely due to the misbehavior of drivers crossing. Motorists are reminded not to drive in opposing lanes of two carriageways, even when the traffic on the ramps is moving slowly,” noted KeNHA.

Several hours later, they reported that traffic has returned to normal and asked road users to be patient and disciplined.

“Road users are encouraged to be patient, avoid overlapping, and carefully follow the instructions given by traffic police officers and road managers to avoid long delays. Meanwhile, traffic flow has been successfully controlled in the Salgaa-Kibunja section,” added KeNHA.
