Paul Cheruiyot Rotich lost his life in a fatal road accident that also left several others seriously injured.
The accident happened on the Kapkatet-Litein road in Kaptolony on Thursday, December 11, in the afternoon.
When did Paul’s brother die?
The driver, Bernard, was the only survivor and remains in a critical condition as police and paramedics work to save his life.
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Paul’s neighbour, Collins Cheruiyot, described the sad incident while revealing other painful details.
“Paul and the other victims were on their way home from the Kapkatet County Hospital. They were in a procession to take the body of Paul’s brother, Samwel Kibet Rotich. Samwel’s body was being taken home for a ritual before the funeral the next day. He had been in the mortuary for a week after he died on Thursday, December 4. Unfortunately, Paul died the following week on the same day,” he said.
How old was Paul when he died?
Paul, 57, and other passengers in the car involved in the accident did not have Samwel’s body, as it was already in another car.
They stayed at the hospital to follow up on something before starting the journey to join the other caravan.
“The car was completely destroyed. Samwel and Paul were very close; they were sharing their secrets. Paul was looking after Samwel while he was in the hospital,” Cheruiyot added.
How old was Samwel when he died?
Samwel, 67, had been ill for some time. Last June, he was diagnosed with chronic throat cancer.
Before that, he was in good health but three months later he was overwhelmed and lost his life.
“Initially, we were taking him to health centers and clinics, but later we had to take him to a big hospital for a detailed examination,” Cheruiyot continued.
When and where will Paul be buried?
He added that the two brothers came from poor families and were part of a family with 15 children, leaving behind two wives.

“Finally we buried Samwel, the family had to start preparations for Paul’s funeral. The biggest challenge is financial. We have already started contacting local leaders to get help. The family that lost loved ones also needs advice, which is currently being given by pastors. More importantly, the wives and children need help, as the two brothers lived in poverty and left their children and wives without a source of income. When Samwel was sick, the family spent a lot of money on his treatment, including selling some property. Paul will be buried on Tuesday, December 23, in the same area as his brother,” he added.
