DPP Orders DCI to Investigate Betty Bayo’s Death After Family Request

The Director of Public Prosecutions has instructed the Directorate of Criminal Investigation to investigate the death of the gospel singer Betty Bayo.

His family, led by his mother Joyce Wairimu Mbugua, requested a DPP investigation, alleging the possibility of foul play.

Betty’s family said they were saddened by her sudden death, noting that she had no known medical conditions before her death.

Why did Betty Bayo’s family send a request to the DPP?

They raised concerns that his death may not have been normal and questioned the circumstances surrounding it. According to the family, they were denied access to post-mortem services and were not given his medical records or details of any treatment he received.

Furthermore, they claimed that the burial was rushed, thus fueling suspicions. The family has now called for an independent investigation to establish the truth.

On Thursday, December 18, ODPP issued a statement regarding the request.

The ODPP noted that it received a formal complaint on Tuesday, December 9.

“The complaint raises concerns and doubts about the circumstances surrounding his death, noting, among other issues, that the deceased had no known medical conditions and that the family was allegedly denied access to the autopsy report.”

The DPP then ordered DCI conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and submit the subsequent file for review and appropriate action.

“The ODPP reaffirms its commitment to carry out its mandate independently, fairly, and in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Kenya,” the statement concluded.
