Jeanette Kamene told TUKO.co.ke that she graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 2015, with second class honours, top class.

He hoped to find a job within months or years after graduation, but a decade later, he’s still looking.

Does Jeanette Kamene have work experience?

“I have had the opportunity to work in some organizations, but mostly for contracts of one month, sometimes three months. As you can see, it is not sustainable,” he said.

Kamene noted that finding a job has become so difficult that sometimes even his applications do not go through. He decided to do ordinary jobs, such as selling eggs and second-hand clothes, but the businesses did not succeed.

In 2021, Kamene had luck to get practical training with the Public Service Commission. However, after the one-year period was over, he had to return home without a job again, facing the same disappointment.

Did PSC hire Jeanette Kamene after practical training?

“The Public Service Commission does not accept practical students in the various offices they send them for practical training. After one year, you just go back to looking for a job diligently. It’s like going back to the previous situation, with only one year of work experience,” he explained.

The mother of three said she had applied for many jobs in different companies and organizations but had not yet been shortlisted or hired.

Kamene admitted that he felt hopeless, as a decade of waiting had worn him out.

He also expressed his frustration at contacting the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), which asked him to start repaying his student loan.

“How can I start paying the loan if I haven’t found a job yet?” he asked. “The longest contract I’ve had was practical training. Others are usually three months or sometimes even one month. It’s very sad,” he shared.

Kamene called potential employers, asking for any job opportunities while assuring them that he is hardworking and eager to learn.

“It doesn’t have to be related to what I studied in school. If it’s not medicine, engineering, or law, there are other jobs I can learn on the job,” he said.
