Kenyan Newspapers, December 17: DCI Releases New Details About Cyrus Jirongo’s Death

Newspapers on Wednesday, December 17, discussed various topics, while the investigation into the death of the former Member of Parliament for Lugari Cyrus Jirongo dominated the pages.

The newspaper reported new police findings on the circumstances surrounding the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo.

Police released new details about the death of the politician and businessman, shedding light on the tragic road accident while confirming that the investigation is still ongoing.

On Tuesday, December 16, detectives from police headquarters, led by homicide director Martin Nyagutu, spent the day in Naivasha reconstructing the scene of the accident and gathering evidence.

The team visited Karai along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway, where Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz collided with a Climax Company Limited bus.

They obtained CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, the last place Jirongo was seen alive, and inspected the wreckage of both vehicles, which had been towed to Naivasha Police Station.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Jirongo died after sustaining serious injuries in the accident that occurred at about 2:19 am on December 13.

His car, registration number KCZ 350C, was hit head-on by a bus, registration number KCU 576A, which was driven by Tyre Kamau Githinji.

The collision pushed Jirongo’s car about 25 meters from the accident site, while the bus stopped about 50 meters away.

Jirongo was alone in the car at the time of the accident.

CCTV footage shows Jirongo arriving at the gas station at 2:18:40 am from Nairobi and stopping for a while without refueling.

He then stopped near the exit at 2:19:10 am.

At 2:19:19 in the morning, he turned right towards Nairobi, and six seconds later, the bus hit his car.

Makachero has interviewed Githinji, who had earlier recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Center and was later released on cash bail.

He has been ordered to report to the police on December 22 for further action.

Investigators have also interviewed the gas station’s night watchman and the gas attendant, who both gave witness statements.

DCI confirmed that medical examiners will revisit the crash site to conduct a detailed analysis.

Makachero is also monitoring Jirongo’s movements before the accident, including the meeting he attended at the Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

Information is collected from bus passengers and other witnesses.

Once the investigation is complete, the full police file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for review.

Jirongo’s death has sparked public concern, with his family questioning how he ended up in Naivasha despite being expected to return home to Gigiri after leaving Karen.

The family welcomed the involvement of medical examiners but stressed that several unanswered questions must be addressed.

The DCI sent its condolences to the Jirongo family and assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and impartial.
