Festus Amimo, Leonard Mambo Mbotela and 5 Other Famous Journalists Who Died in 2025

TUKO.co.ke has prepared a list of seven journalists who died this year.

1. Leonard Mambo Mbotela

Veteran Kenyan broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela breathed his last on Friday, February 7, in Nairobi after falling ill.

He was 84 years old and was in and out of the hospital.

According to reports from his family, Mbotela died of complications, including low blood pressure.

He was one of the most influential people in Kenyan radio, especially through his long-running radio program ‘Je Hu Ni Ungwana?’.

2. Fred Parsayo

Fredrick Parsayo died in 2025.

He was a young journalist for the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

He died in mysterious circumstances at his home in Kinoo street, Kikuyu area, on Friday, March 21.

3. Nick Mudimba

In March 2022, Journalist Nick Mudimba died after collapsing and suffering a seizure at his home in Syokimau, Machakos county.

He was experiencing health problems, including high uric acid levels, and sought medical attention and was taking prescribed medication on the day of his death.

He went home, watched a football match, and took the prescribed medication. Shortly after, he collapsed and began to have seizures. The attempt to save him failed, and he died at his home.

Mudimba was a respected sports journalist who worked for media outlets including KTNSwitch TV, and CGTN Africa.

4. Silas Apollo

Journalist Silas Apollo, who worked for Nation Media Group (NMG) and later The Nairobi Law Monthly, died on April 9, 2025.

Apollo died from injuries sustained in a hit and run road accident on Kiambu Road in Nairobi. He was hit by a speeding motorcycle while crossing the road on foot on his way home from work.

The writer’s death was not immediately known to his family; he was not identified at the scene, and his body was transferred to the morgue as an unidentified person. The family learned of his death just a few days later, on Saturday, April 12, after a relative called him and the call was answered by an officer at the Kiambu Police Station.

An autopsy report confirmed that the cause of death was massive bleeding from a massive head injury and two broken ribs. He was 35 years old at the time of his death.

Apollo was buried on Friday, May 2, at his home in Nyarach, Rongo, Migori county.

5. Edward Kwach

Veteran Kenyan radio host Edward Kwach died at the age of 44 on April 28, 2025, after battling spinal disease.

Kwach, who was a presenter at Standard Media Group’s Spice FM until his death, died at a hospital in Nairobi where he was receiving treatment.

Kwach’s family expressed gratitude for the public’s support during his illness, including blood donations, and asked for continued prayers during their difficult time.

A memorial service was held at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, and he was buried at the family home in Simenya, Siaya county, on Saturday, May 10.

6. Charles Omuga Kabisai

On August 11, Kenya lost another veteran radio host, Charles Omuga Kabisae. He died at the age of 65 after a long illness.

He was a popular voice in the Dholuo and Kiswahili services of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

He was known for his professional and respectful delivery of obituaries and special notices (Special and Obituaries).

7. Festus Amimo

Festus Amimo of Mayienga FM died on Sunday, December 7.

It is reported that he collapsed and died in a hotel in Nairobi. Amimo’s funeral arrangements are currently underway at his village home in Awasi, the county Poisonous.

The house has a well fenced perimeter wall around the large yard, and a gravelled path from the gate to the front door.
