New questions continue to surround the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament and former Minister, Cyrus Jirongo.
This is after the guard of the gas station gave a new narrative that contradicts the description of the driver of the Climax Coach bus involved in the accident.

Jirongo, aged 64, died on the spot after a head-on collision between his Mercedes-Benz saloon car and a Climax Coach bus on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, Karai area, Naivasha Sub-county, at 9pm on Saturday, December 13.
At the heart of this new twist is Ephraim Cheptek, a security guard who was working at a gas station near the accident site the night Jirongo died.
Cheptek’s explanation differs from that of the Climax Coach bus driver, who claimed that Jirongo had just left a petrol station and entered his lane to avoid Nairobi-bound vehicles.
The bus driver said he tried to avoid the accident but was afraid of losing control of the bus carrying 65 passengers traveling from Nairobi to kiss.
Was the road quiet before Jirongo’s accident?
Cheptek said he was careful at the time and witnessed the actions of the late Member of Parliament shortly before the accident, stressing that what happened was surprising.
“At that time, I was still awake and I witnessed what happened. When he entered, he moved slowly, then when he approached the fuel pumps, he suddenly increased his speed again. The way he entered was not normal at all,” Cheptek said.
According to the security guard, the road was quiet without cars shortly before the accident, which contradicts the bus driver’s statement that the traffic situation affected Jirongo’s decisions.
He emphasized that no car was following the late Member of Parliament and there was no traffic in either direction until after the accident happened.
“If you look at the road, it was quiet. For that short period, there was no traffic. There was only one car. It was only after the accident that other cars arrived and the queue started because the cars slowed down. But when he arrived, there was no other car around him. He was completely alone,” Cheptek told.
What caused the head-on crash?
Cheptek explained that Jirongo entered the petrol station from the Nairobi side and slowed down as if he wanted to refuel.
However, he did not stop, but continued straight through the station to the exit to the highway.
“He entered as if he wanted fuel, and then he just continued and passed, speeding up. We were there; I was standing at the car wash,” he said.
The security guard further claimed that Jirongo did not stop or give way when he reached the way out of the gas station to enter the road.
He said the late Member of Parliament increased his speed and entered directly into the path of the oncoming bus, which caused a head-on accident.
“When he got here, he headed to that side of the road and went straight. The speed was not very fast. He slowed down, I thought he wanted fuel, but suddenly he increased his speed. When he got to the exit of the station, he didn’t stop at all,” Cheptek said.

He added that the force of the collision was so great that it pushed Jirongo’s car about 80 to 100 meters away from the accident site.
The security guard said that by the time people rushed to the scene, the former Member of Parliament had already died.
“He made a U-turn here. When he did that, the bus was coming this way, then they met here and collided head-on. From there, the car went around to where it stopped,” he said pointing to where the car ended up.
Jirongo’s last moves are confusing
As previously reported, police records show that Jirongo was driving a Mercedes-Benz with registration number KCZ 305C from Nakuru towards Nairobi when the accident happened.
Officers from the Naivasha Police Station arrived at the scene and took Jirongo’s body to the mortuary in Naivasha Sub-County, awaiting an autopsy.
Beyond the accident itself, Jirongo’s movements before his death have raised more questions, with family and close associates saying he left Karen around 11:30pm.
The veteran politician was expected to return home to Gigiri, Nairobi, while the family insisted he had no plans to travel to Naivasha.
As the funeral preparations continue, where Jirongo is expected to be buried on December 30, 2025, at his home in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, conflicting narratives have continued to increase interest and questions among the public.
