When did Wetang’ula meet Cyrus Jirongo?
Speaking during the funeral of former MP Joseph Denar on Saturday, December 13, Wetang’ula said he was shocked by the recent series of deaths, including that of Jirongo and his elder brother.
The speaker recounted how Jirongo called him after the Heroes’ Day celebrations on Friday, December 12, asking for a meeting.
The two met in Karen from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm before they parted ways.
“After the Republic celebrations, Cyrus Jirongo called me to inform me that he wanted to meet. We stayed together until about 3:30 at night in Karen before I left to rest because I had an event to attend the next day. In the morning, when I woke up and checked my phone, I only saw a message saying ‘pole pole pole.’ Why? Jirongo was dead. That’s human life — today you’re alive, tomorrow you’re gone,” Wetang’ula said.
He reflected on the unpredictability of life, noting that death can happen at any time — whether while eating, bathing, or working.
Did Wetang’ula meet his older brother before his death?
Wetang’ula also revealed his last moments with his older brother, James Mukhwana, who died on Wednesday, December 10, after a long illness.

“Death follows us everywhere. The other day, I was with my elder brother, who was ill, and I told him I was leaving for Nairobi but I will return. That same night, I received a call that he had died. He is still in the mortuary, and we will bury him on Friday, December 19,” he revealed.
Jirongo, who is remembered for his time as a minister and MP, has been mourned by leaders across the political divide.
How did friends and family mourn Jirongo?
At the same time, leaders mourned Jirongo as an ambitious and generous politician who helped all with all his heart.
His family said he was their sole provider, comparing his death to the loss of a great tree.
They asked for prayers as his sudden death was unexpected, especially during the holiday season when they had planned a meeting.
