Nairobi police officers in plain clothes gunned down two suspected robbers on Tuesday afternoon after they attacked and robbed a man of an unknown amount of money along Moi Avenue, Nairobi.
According to witnesses and police reports, a gang of five targeted a customer shortly after he withdrew an undisclosed sum of money from a bank. The suspects grabbed the cash and attempted to flee.
Officers on patrol quickly responded to the incident and shot two of the suspects, while the remaining three escaped on foot during the midday confrontation.
A manhunt for the fleeing suspects is ongoing, said Central Police Commander Stephene Nyakombo, who added that police have intensified operations in the city to curb gang-related crimes linked to similar past incidents.
“We have deployed more personnel to ensure safety for all in the city ahead of the festivities,” Commander Nyakombo said.
At the scene, police had to lob teargas to disperse onlookers before moving the bodies to the mortuary, where they will undergo autopsy.
Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the investigation unfolds.
