Speaking during the funeral of his sister-in-law Beryl Odinga there Bondo on Saturday, December 6, Ida expressed her displeasure at the misuse of youth by politicians to advance their selfish agendas.
How Ida Odinga advised Kenyan youth
Ida called the young people to start, encouraging them to be useful for the republic.
The only way young citizens can be useful, he said, is to obtain official citizenship documents and register as voters and use their civil rights to bring about positive change in the country.
“The best thing you guys can do, there will be an election in 2027. Make sure you have an ID. If you don’t have an ID, go register it and have an ID. Second, register as a voter. And that will make your job very easy. You won’t even follow anyone. With an ID and a voting card, you just go to the station and choose the leader you want. Right?” he asked.
He advised them against being turned into political tools to be used in muscle-flexing and superiority competitions.
Ida told the youth not to waste their formative years by watching political players who want to align their selfish interests. Instead they should actively participate in bringing about change.
“I was very disappointed when the young people were shouting. There is no need to push and pull each other when leaders come here to show us that they are famous. Leaders are famous, we know that. Don’t shout too much to show us that. Our children, we love them, but not only that, you are our future. So we want you to be good-natured people, people who understand what is going on, and good people to lead us in the future,” he said.
Earlier, Ida expressed her disapproval of the youths who disturbed Beryl’s funeral with noise while bereaved family members paid their respects.

He criticized the mourners for turning the solemn funeral into a political platform and accused them of advancing the agenda of their masters at the expense of the bereaved family.

Speaking on behalf of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s extended family, Ida called out the violent scene, reprimanding them for their disrespect.
He reminded the gathered people that the event was not political and stressed that it would not be turned into a battlefield.
Ida ordered the rowdy crowd to leave if they could not follow order, stressing that their behavior was unfair just because they were students of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology.
He emphasized that the funeral was intended to honor and lay his brother-in-law to rest in peace, not to provide an opportunity for political disruption.
