A lawyer representing the family of missing security analyst Mwenda Mbijiwe broke down in tears outside the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday as he pleaded for answers on the disappearance that has remained unresolved since June 2021.
Advocate Evans Ondieki spoke to journalists moments after a court mention in a case related to Mbijiwe’s disappearance. Earlier, the Milimani High Court had summoned Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to personally appear before the court on December 3, 2025, and explain the analyst’s whereabouts, as well as account for the prolonged failure to disclose progress in the investigation.
Ondieki faulted the authorities for trying to open an inquest before clarifying what happened to Mbijiwe.
“Even in a dictatorship people are given a chance. If you disagree with an individual and because he thinks he has a lot of money, money is not everything. Our life is the most important thing,” he said.
He pointed out that the right to life was non-negotiable and called on investigators to present what they have been pursuing for the past four years.
“They want to start an inquest. They cannot start an inquest unless they are aware he is not alive,” he said.
“We want them to bring that police file and tell us who was the complainant, what they were investigating, and why it has taken them four years to come up with this theory that he is missing.”
The emotional lawyer condemned what he described as greed and impunity, insisting that no amount of influence or wealth should excuse injustice.
“You can acquire the entirety of Kenya and cause so much pain to others, but what does it assist you with? Greed and hatred will not take us anywhere. Every life counts. I want this mother to get her justice,” he added before breaking down in tears.
Mbijiwe’s mother, Jane Gatwiri, also spoke to journalists, accusing several prominent individuals of fabricating allegations against her son prior to his disappearance.
“I want to thank God, my counsel and my family for their support. I want to address DCI Kenyatta, the former governor of Meru and other prominent people from Meru who sat down and put false allegations upon my son,” she said.
Despite the silence from authorities, Gatwiri maintained that she believes her son is still alive.
“If at all they killed my son, God in heaven is watching them. They are going to pay very soon,” she said.
