Embu County Speaker Josiah Thiriku announced his resignation just a week after a highly contested by-election in the state, where both representatives lost.
He has also written to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) asking for by-election dates to be allocated.
Which Embu representatives resigned?
The two are Newton Kariuki from Muminji ward and Duncan Mbui from Evurore ward.
Kariuki, who was the opposition candidate from the Democratic Party, lost the parliamentary seat to Leonard Wa Muthende UDA.
Mbui initially ran under the Democratic Party for the People (DCP) but resigned after the former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua to support Kariuki following the alliance with the DP.
Mbui later claimed betrayal, claiming that Gachagua failed to inform him about the alliance. He later joined the Labor Party, led by a former MP for Gatundu North Moses Kuriaand ran under CCM but was unsuccessful.
The by-election was marred by widespread chaos, with officials visiting polling stations and allegedly intimidating and bribing voters to support their favorite candidate.
Why did Gachagua remove Duncan Mbui’s candidacy?
Despite Mbui’s claims, Gachagua explained that the decision to withdraw his candidacy from the Mbeere North parliamentary contest was reached after consulting with the elders.

He disclosed that Embu leaders told them that they spoke to the voters, and many expressed their support for Kariuki.
He noted that as a respected leader, he had no choice but to obey and do what the leaders suggested.
