Kenya Defense Force (KDF) naval officers are being investigated over allegations of misconduct while on duty.

The officers were part of a multi-agency team sent to seize a vessel in the Indian Ocean suspected of smuggling contraband.

The October 25 operation was successful, as the team seized 1024 kilograms of methamphetamine.

During the operation, part of the officers KDF it is reported to disappear with part of the substance.

“On October 25, 2025, a security team from various agencies, including personnel from the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), managed to seize a boat off the coast carrying 1,024 kilograms of methamphetamine (crystal meth). It has been claimed that during the operation, and when the drugs were being unloaded to be transported to the shore, some KDF personnel involved in the mission stole and hid part of the drugs for their own benefit personally,” KDF said.

The army explained that despite the alleged theft, the items were all found and had been stored on the coast before further action.

Meanwhile, the suspected naval officers will face disciplinary action if the investigation implicates them in any wrongdoing.

“We want to clarify that the 1,024 kilos of methamphetamine that was washed ashore is still safe and under continuous, round-the-clock protection by a special multi-agency security team. Suspected KDF personnel are currently being investigated by the relevant authorities. If the allegations are confirmed, appropriate disciplinary and legal action will be taken in accordance with the law,” KDF said.

Besides, a KDF officer was arrested in Homa Bay along with other suspects in connection with the possession of rhino horn.

Benard Omondi Sunga, an officer of the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), is among the three suspects arrested in Homa Bay Sub-County for possessing rhino horn worth about KSh 2.9 million.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), officers from Homa Bay Police Station, and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) staff from Ruma National Park organized the arrest there.

How were the Homa Bay suspects arrested?

The operation has been hailed as a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against wildlife trade.

Sunga, George Oloo, and Argwings Watta were arrested in Rodi Market during a carefully planned manhunt operation.

The suspects were arrested while traveling in a black Toyota Kluger, registration number KBM 463G.

A thorough search of the car revealed a rhinoceros horn weighing 2.9 kg hidden inside. The three were immediately arrested and have since been arraigned on charges of wildlife trafficking, a serious offense under Kenyan law that carries severe penalties.

DCI praised the efforts of cooperation with KWS.
