The decision to return the couple’s remains was made by their children, and it comes amid lingering questions about the circumstances of their deaths.
As the family mourns, TUKO.co.ke shares the three main reasons for children’s decision to bury their parents abroad rather than in the country of their birth.
Reason 1: Strong ties to Switzerland
Mutaaga’s children have spent most of their lives in Zurich, Switzerland, and have little contact with Ugandawhere their parents were from.
After decades abroad, children are more familiar with Swiss culture, social systems, and communities, and feel more comfortable dealing with such personal issues in the country they consider home.
Sources close to the family say the decision reflects a desire for security and an environment where the grieving process can be managed privately away from the public scrutiny that often accompanies high-profile cases in Uganda.
It is a choice born of grief, fear, and action, a way to ensure that David and Florence Mutaaga are laid to rest in a place like home.
Reason 2: Lack of clarity in the investigation
The authorities in Uganda have faced great challenges in revealing the motive for the murder.
Two regular workers from the Mutaagas household were detained to assist in the investigation, but despite the involvement of multiple intelligence agencies, investigators have been unable to identify the killers.
This uncertainty has left the children very restless. Sources indicate that the ongoing lack of response, as well as fear for their own safety, played a key role in their choice.
They are worried that whoever is responsible for their parents’ murder will remain free. Until it is clear, they are not in a good position to return to Uganda for the funeral.
Reason 3: Potential for Family Conflict
Following the deaths, rumors emerged that the murders could be linked to tensions within the extended family.
Reports indicate that David Mutaaga had recently inherited property from his father, which is said to have caused friction among some family members.
Investigators are investigating whether this heritage could be the cause of the deadly attack, although no conclusive evidence has yet been released to the public.
The possibility that the deaths could be linked to a family feud added another layer of confusion and concern for the children, strengthening the decision to return their parents’ remains to Switzerland.

For the Mutaaga family, the return of the bodies is not only closure but also to regain some control over the tragedy that left them reeling.
How the Mutaagas died
David and Florence Mutaaga had returned to Uganda after more than 30 years in Switzerland, hoping to enjoy a peaceful retirement in the familiar environment of their origins.
Their lives were tragically cut short in their home in Lugonjo, Nakiwogo Cell, on the 6th of July.
According to police reports, the couple was found with serious stab wounds.
The brutality of the attack prompted an immediate investigation that has since been hampered by a lack of clear evidence.
Neighbors, a housemaid, and a farm boy who first discovered the bodies have all provided information, and forensic samples were collected, but the case remains unsolved.
