In a Facebook post on Wednesday, November 26, Natembeya said the officers guarding him had been removed illegally.
Did the government deprive Natembeya of security guards?
The Governor of Trans Nzoia strongly criticized the Inspector General of Police and the National Police Service for withdrawing his guards during the preparations for the Malava parliamentary by-election.
“This action violates Sections 30 and 31 of the National Police Service Act, which require the Office of the Inspector General to provide protection to public officials whose duties place them in great danger. There is no court order, no disciplinary notice, nor official explanation given regarding this decision. This action puts my life in danger and interferes with the implementation of the county’s duties,” Natembeya said.
He called on the NPS to immediately reinstate its guards and respect the constitutional standards of justice, professionalism and rule of law.
Why did the NPS remove Natembeya guards?
Speaking about the incident in Kasipul, Minister Murkomen confirmed that the NPS returned to the camp the police officers who were attached to governor Natembeya.
The Minister of Internal Security revealed that the NPS investigation showed that some officers who were protecting VVIPs and VIPs were collaborating with gangs to cause violence.
Murkomen said several other political leaders have also been affected by this move, and Natembeya is not the only one who has been a strong critic of the President’s government William Ruto.
“Any action taken by the National Police Service aims to prevent a crisis. If a police officer assigned to protect a VIP walks with gangsters or works with them, the best step is to remove him immediately. I know there are several VVIPs and VIPs, not only Natembeya, from both political parties, whose guards have been removed because the police have information that some of their officers are involved in crime,” said Murkomen.
The minister also warned that the police will not allow citizens to remain in the polling stations after casting their vote.
NPS gives a warning to the leaders before the by-elections

In a press release, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the service will take strict action against politicians who incite the public.
He urged the leaders to avoid making statements that could undermine the public’s trust in institutions such as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
According to Nyaga, the police will arrest politicians who violate peace regardless of their position or status in society.
Nyaga added that the NPS is working closely with the electoral commission to ensure adequate security is provided on polling day.
