The former vice president described the approach as “desperation” on the government’s part, warning that it undermines the secrecy and integrity of the vote.

“In the desperation of the corrupt administration to steal the upcoming by-elections, they have instructed the voters to take pictures of their votes at the polling booth showing that they have chosen their favorite candidate and to collect not less than KSh 5000.

If this is not corruption and intimidation of voters, then what is? It undermines the secrecy of the vote, violates the law, and mocks the trust we place in our electoral system. We must call it for what it is: a desperate act of corruption and bad governance,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo said the opposition will pursue legal action and called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to investigate the allegations.

He further condemned the use of government resources by government officials, including Cabinet Secretaries Hassan JohoGeoffrey Ruku, and Opiyo Wandayi, as well as parliament leaders, against the constitution and election laws.

“We have discovered with deep regret, although not surprising, the direct misuse of government resources by civil servants during this limited election cycle, contrary to the 2010 Constitution of Kenya. Such conduct destroys public confidence, undermines the fairness of our electoral process, and violates the basic principles of accountability, neutrality, and integrity,” Kalonzo said.

The opposition also expressed concern about voter registration processes, including the introduction of iris scanning technology, registration being held at state offices during business hours, and the deployment of registration kits without full transparency.

Kalonzo warned that such measures could affect not only the by-election but also the 2027 general election.

“The integrity of the upcoming by-elections of November 27 and the General Elections of 2027 and closing loopholes that, in the past, have been used to influence our votes. Preparing elections is a process and must cover the entire cycle of elections, starting with registration. Elections do not need fraud on the day of voting to be stolen. You can be stolen quietly… in the shadows… during registration, where the management is weaker,” said the leader of Wiper.

Kalonzo emphasized the wider moral and civic implications of the electoral process, highlighting the role of the youth in holding leaders accountable.
