Speaking on Wednesday, November 19, Nyoro rejected the belief that he was silent during his tenure as chairman of the Budget and Expenditure Committee when the government was allegedly creating unworkable economic policies and projects.

The lawmaker noted that the committee under his chairmanship never approved economic wrongdoing, including what he called illegal loans, which he suggested were discovered long after he left the committee.

“They ask; Why are you talking now? I am talking now because even then, when I was talking to those reports, even the reports of the Budget Committee showed that we were totally against illegal debts. And none of the illegal debts were taken when I was the Budget Chairman,” he said.

The MP emphasized that he has always opposed the guarantee and other secret loans that the government bought without the approval of the National Assembly.

According to him, such activities were illegal and would end up hurting the already overburdened tax payers.

“There were zero guarantees, zero illegal guarantees, zero secret loans, because it was bad, and it’s still bad,” he said.

The MP further suggested that the school fees were compromised after he left office.

He explained that he always prioritized basic education in the budgeting process, adding that there was no way he would reduce education funds, which he said he is a strong advocate of.

To emphasize his commitment to education, the MP said he pushed the budget to serve the teachers of Junior High School (JSS), who had done protest wanting proof.

“The school medicine was not reduced when I was the chairman of the budget. It is being reduced now. And I advise you, there are things I was giving when we were preparing the budget. The current students of Junior High School (JSS) who have been confirmed, 46,000 of them, are very few people who supported the confirmation. Because they were saying, they are the same people who are on the streets. I specifically said the point, they are on the streets because they have no money,” Nyoro said.

He said that even after his departure from the powerful committee, he would continue to advocate for the financial well-being of primary education in the country.

Nyoro vowed not to sit back and watch tuition funds be slashed, with the shortfall handed over to parents to fill.

“I have been an advocate of education, and that is why, even now, I feel very bad that the government is increasing the school fees for day scholars. And as my last word, I can assure you, as a member of parliament for Kiharu, we will not allow the government to increase the burden on the parents of these scholars.

They can get money from any other place, from any other vote, but we will not allow the government to destroy free primary education. If there’s one thing I can give you, it’s that. Whatever it takes, academic education can only go up; it cannot decrease. And so we cannot shift the burden to the parents,” he said.
