A potential conflict appears to be brewing between the Democratic Party for the People (DCP) and the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), with senior leaders exchanging accusations of dishonesty.

Has George Natembeya been paid by NIS?

The deputy leader of the DCP party, Cleophas Malala, targeted the governor of Trans Nzoia, George Natembeya, accusing him of lack of integrity in his activities within the opposition coalition.

At the center of the dispute is the Kisa Mashariki ward by-election, where the DCP got agreement from allied parties to represent his candidate.

The agreement was meant to reverse the DCP’s earlier gesture of stepping down in the Malava parliamentary by-election in favor of the DAP-K candidate, who was seen as having more power in the region.

Despite the agreement, Natembeya, an influential figure in DAP-K, insisted that his party must field its candidate in Kisa Mashariki, dismissing earlier understandings that DCP would represent a coalition.

Responding to the governor’s position, Malala described him as a saboteur allegedly organized by the President William Ruto to break the resistance from within.

“It is morally wrong for leaders in the United Opposition to rock the boat from within. We have one enemy: a person who ignores the rule of law, basic human rights and continues to promote corruption, favoritism and looting of public resources in Kenya. His agents should consider themselves sufficiently informed,” Malala said.

Has George Natembeya been paid to weaken the opposition?

Adding to his criticism, the former Kakamega senator alleged that Natembeya had received government funds and was working under the direction of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to weaken the momentum of the opposition.

He questioned the governor’s intentions, suggesting that his actions were meant to undermine the alliance’s by-election strategy.

Malala demanded more;

“The government, fearing a big victory from the Opposition, has allegedly chosen George Natembeya, giving him a lot of resources to destroy our campaign. He has crossed the county, from Trans Nzoia to Kakamega, not to build unity, but to sow division.”

The opposition coalition had agreed to cooperate in the November by-elections as a rehearsal for the 2027 general election.

The member parties decided to support the strongest candidates from within the coalition to increase their chances of victory.

For example, the DCP resigned in the Mbeere North race in favor of the DP, which has strong popular support, and he also resigned in Malava to support the more popular DAP-K candidate.
