This comes as the party celebrates 20 years in a series of events going on in Mombasa right now.

In a heartfelt post, Duale recalled his first election in 2007, when he entered Parliament representing Dujis Constituency under ODM.

Is Duale one of the founding members of ODM?

He described ODM as a way to launch Kenya’s democratic reforms, saying he and the President William Ruto were among the founding members of the party.

“For reference, my journey in politics is related to the birth and growth of the Orange Democratic Movement. When ODM opened its doors twenty years ago, we, including the president, were among the founding members and rank-and-file who believed that Kenya deserved a wider democratic horizon and a louder and freer voice,” Duale wrote.

Duale reflected on the party’s influence in nurturing leaders and expanding the democratic space in Kenya.

He paid tribute to the long-time leader of ODM, Raila Odingaemphasizing the sacrifices made for the freedom of the country.

“There were times when he carried the weight of the entire nation on his shoulders. Times when he bled so that the rest of us could breathe freely. Even when we disagreed, even when the country was shaken, he did not do that. He stood, sometimes alone, sometimes he was hurt, but he was always firm in the belief that Kenya should never limit its freedom. That is his lasting gift,” Duale said.

Did Duale appreciate ODM for advising him?

With Duale now serving under Ruto’s United Democratic Party (UDA), he insisted that his early steps in politics would not have been possible without ODM.

“The party gave me my first service platform and that is a debt I humbly accept,” he wrote.

“Orange formed my first steps, Yellow guides my work today. And really, these colors are not opposites. They have the same hope, just in different shades. Yellow could be the future we saw in Orange!” Duale added.

Ministers also distinguished between democracy and delivery, praising Ruto’s approach. He said Ruto has upheld the value of democracy derived from ODM, but has also added new weight to the letter D: delivery.

“Democracy must speak and delivery must respond. That is the Kenya we are building now,” he noted, stressing the importance of protecting freedom while ensuring that citizens get essential services.
