Oscar fell ill in his hometown of São Paulo in Brazil.

What happened to Oscar?

According to Brazilian newspaper Globo, Oscar was on an exercise bike when he fell and was unconscious for two minutes.

The 34-year-old fell ill while undergoing a physical at Sao Paulo’s Barra Funda training center on Tuesday, ahead of the start of the new season.

His club issued a statement explaining what happened and confirming that he was in good condition.

“Oscar has a change of heart, and he was treated quickly by the club’s medical team from the Einstein Israelita Hospital, who were present in the area. The player was then taken to the hospital, where he is currently in good condition and is still being examined for further tests to clarify the diagnosis,” read the statement on the website.

Reports from Brazil now suggest that Oscar is considering retirement after his recent defeat. His wife, Ludmila Emboaba, with whom they have two children, is said to be encouraging him to retire.

He last played for São Paulo on July 27 against Corinthians. He broke his spine after only 20 minutes. Heart problems were reported at the time, but he was confirmed fit to continue playing.

“Thank you very much for the messages and prayers. Everything will be fine, God willing,” said on Instagram.

Oscar’s trip to play soccer

The player born in 1991 started in Sao Paulo before moving to Internacional, where Chelsea brought him from 2012. He arrived in West London the same year as Eden Hazard and spent five years.

“The thoughts of everyone at Chelsea FC are with our former player Oscar and his family at this difficult time,” said Blues.

He controversially moved to the Chinese Premier League, where he joined Shanghai Port and became one of the highest paid footballers in the world. He spent seven years in China before returning to Sao Paulo earlier this year. His current contract expires in 2027.
