John Ogutu, whose relatives live in Huruma Estate, Nairobi, was killed in the unrest in Dar es Salaam on 29 October.
Dar es Salaam was among the regions most affected by the unrest. His family says he was returning to Kenya when he met his death. The 33-year-old man was teaching in a coastal town.
It has now emerged that his body cannot be found in the morgue where he was reportedly kept after he died from gunshot wounds.
Vocal Africa, a human rights group based in Nairobi, is calling on the Kenyan government to intervene.
The organization submitted a request to the Secretary General of Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’oei, asking him to take immediate action.
“We are writing to you with great concern regarding two Kenyan citizens who have been directly affected by the chaos and violence that continues following the controversial elections in the United Republic of Tanzania. We request the immediate intervention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to get justice and humane treatment for both people,” Vocal Africa wrote to Sing’oei.
According to the group, Ogutu’s body was kept at the Mwananyamala Hospital mortuary following his death.
His family and friends visited the mortuary to view the body, but were dismayed to learn that it was missing.

However, we have received alarming reports that the body of the deceased and his friends went missing two days ago. It is still unknown where this situation has caused great grief to the family. its, which is desperate for closure and a dignified return to their surviving loved ones,” the group said.
Through the chief executive officer Hussein Khalid, Vocal Africa asked Sing’oei to contact his Tanzanian counterpart and help find the body to bring closure to the family of the deceased.
“Involve the Tanzanian authorities quickly to find out where Ogutu’s body is and ensure it is released to his family without further delay for transportation and burial in Kenya,” he said.
