Kalonzo and Raila’s friendship lasted for many years. In 2013, Kalonzo was Raila’s running mate in the presidential election under the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD).

The leader of the party put aside his presidential aspirations after agreeing to support Raila. Unfortunately, they lost the race to the former president Uhuru Kenyattawho won the presidency.

Despite the defeat, Kalonzo still supported Raila as his running mate in the 2017 election under the National Super Alliance (NASA). The two still did not enter the presidency.

That failure was not enough to make Kalonzo withdraw from his partnership with Raila, even when people like Moses Wetang’ula and Stay Mudavadi when they joined the Kenya Kwanza Alliance in the 2022 elections.

Despite not being Raila’s running mate, Kalonzo still supported Raila’s bid to run for the presidency under the Union of Declaration of Unity One Kenya.

This time too, Raila did not enter the presidency after losing to Ruto, who was his biggest opponent at the time.
