Twelve more people have been arrested for exam cheating as the Form Four National Examination (KCSE) enters its third day.

The arrests occurred in Nairobi and Migori counties, while cases of cheating were reported in Kisii and West Pokot, leading to the arrest of examiners and administrators at several examination centres.

“We will not allow any attempt to destroy the future of our children or the international reputation of our national certification system,” the statement read.

On the same day, officials from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and security agencies—tasked with protecting the integrity of the examinations—unveiled thefts at Kenya Muslim Academy School in Huruma (Nairobi), Ugarimek Secondary School in Migori, and Itumbedioke Secondary School.

In Nairobi, a university student was arrested for pretending to be a fourth form candidate.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the student had been paid KSh 20,000 to take the exam on behalf of the candidate. He was arrested along with five supervisors, a station manager and a supervisor.

In Migori, two teachers believed to be members of the Board of Management along with the center manager and supervisor, were also arrested on similar allegations.

This arrest comes as the Ministry of Education reaffirms its commitment to strengthen examination security across the country.

The Minister of Education maintained that the integrity of the ongoing national examinations will be considered.

Education Minister Julius Ogamba announced that the results of the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) are expected to be released next month.

On Wednesday, October 29, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba appeared before the National Committee on Education to discuss the government’s readiness to administer national examinations and assessments.

When did KPSEA, KJSEA, KCSE exams start?

Apart from the KPSEA and KJSEA, which started on October 27, the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations are already ongoing since October 21.

The Minister of Education, Julius Ogamba, assured the parliamentary committee and the public that the examinations are going well, despite minor errors.

The national examinations are coordinated through a multi-agency system involving the Ministries of Education and the Interior, which have deployed considerable human and security resources to maintain the integrity of the examinations.

A total of 342,687 contracted workers including station managers, supervisors, supervisors, and officials from both ministries have been tasked with overseeing the process.

Ogamba acknowledged the challenge posed by fake exam papers circulating online and confirmed that people have been arrested.

He also issued a stern warning to people involved in fraudulent activities, stressing the government’s commitment to protect the integrity of the national assessment system.

More than 1.2 million 6th grade students are currently taking the KPSEA exams, which are part of their transition to Junior High School under the Competency Based Education (CBE) framework.
