Newspapers: Cracks Emerge in Opposition Gachagua, Kalonzo Plan to Visit Raila’s Tomb

Newspapers on Wednesday, November 5, reported on the apparent division within the United Opposition, with senior leaders holding meetings without including their colleagues.

Elsewhere, newspapers reported on a planned visit by the United Opposition to the home of Raila Odinga in Bondo this week.

The newspaper People Daily reported on the apparent split within the United Opposition Alliance preparing to challenge the President William Ruto in 2027.

The division became evident after the main leaders Rigathi GachaguaKalonzo Musyoka, and Eugene Wamalwa to meet without informing their colleagues Martha Karua, Fred Matiang’i, and Mukhisa Kituyi.

Sources said the meeting ended with Gachagua and Musyoka planning to visit Raila Odinga’s home in Bondo without other leaders.

Karua, Matiang’i, and Kituyi responded by holding their own meeting, warning that the situation could show disunity within the coalition.

Gachagua is reported to be unhappy with the influence of Karua and Matiang’i in Mount Kenya.

The situation became more volatile after Matiang’i was appointed as Jubilee’s presidential candidate and his representative in the Opposition Union, which angered Gachagua.

Some of Gachagua’s partners, including the Member of Parliament for Embakasi Kati Benjamin Gathiru, accused Matiang’i of being a “project” to sabotage the opposition and wanting to take advantage of his popularity before withdrawing from politics.
