Ruto made the remarks during a public meeting held a few days after the funeral of the former Prime Minister Raila Odingasaying that the late ODM leader was his only real opponent.
In his speech, Ruto disparaged the new coalition of opposition leaders led by Gachagua and the leader of Wiper, Kalonzo Musyokasaying they have no concrete agenda.
He pointed out that without Raila, the political scene in the country does not have a big challenge for his presidency.
What did Gachagua say to Ruto?
However, speaking during a joint opposition meeting held on Monday, November 3, at SKM Command Plaza, Nairobi, Gachagua responded to Ruto by saying that his real opponents are not politicians, but Kenyans.
“I have heard William Ruto bragging that following Raila’s death, he has no rival. I would like to inform him that we are not his rivals. His rivals are the people of Kenya,” Gachagua said.
“Kenyans have not gone anywhere. We are just doing what they want. Although you seem to be celebrating Raila’s death, because you quietly said you are happy that you have no other opponent, know that your opponents are not us — they are millions of Kenyans. Get ready to face them,” he added.
Gachagua emphasized that the opposition is working together to create a single strategy to face Ruto in 2027.

Why will the opposition present one candidate?
He explained that ongoing political activities, including by-elections, are part of the joint preparations to find and support one presidential candidate.
“For those who are skeptical, what is going on in the by-elections is an exercise to test the system and method of finding one presidential candidate. We want to assure Kenyans that come rain or shine, we are committed to fulfilling their wishes for unity. They want one candidate who will liberate the country, restore respect for salaries, stop corruption and waste of public property, and end indiscriminate killings and kidnappings. That will come true,” he added.
Will opposition leaders visit Raila’s grave?
Meanwhile, Kalonzo Musyoka confirmed that the joint opposition team led by Gachagua will visit Raila’s grave in Bondo on Thursday, November 3, to pay their last respects.
He said that the family of the deceased has given official permission for the visit and encouraged fellow opposition leaders as well as supporters of the late ODM leader to join the procession.
Kalonzo noted that the event will also be a cultural celebration to honor Raila’s legacy and celebrate Kenya’s diverse culture and heritage.
