This statement comes at a time when tension has arisen in the country after the 2025 General Election.

Why did the United States warn its citizens against going to Tanzania?

In a statement shared on its website, the United States raised security concerns due to protest that took place in that country.

“Rethink travel to Tanzania due to unrest, crime, terrorism, and targeting of gay and lesbian people. Some areas are extremely dangerous. Read the entire Travel Advisory,” the statement read in part.

The government said that violence was common in the area due to ongoing unrest. They said that violence can be identified in ways such as car theft, robbery, theft and sexual violence.

They further urged citizens to be careful when visiting the Mtwara region due to the possibility of terrorist activities in the area.

People under LGBTQ (Questions, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgenders, and Interrogators) were also alerted.

“Members of the gay and lesbian community have been arrested, targeted, and harassed. People who identify as gay or lesbian may be more likely to be targeted by the police. People arrested on suspicion of having sex with same-sex couples may face physical tests,” they added.

The US government issued guidelines that its citizens should follow if they decide to visit Tanzania.

They were encouraged to monitor the local media for updates on any security issues facing the country.

Travelers were also advised against public displays of same-sex affection.

Enrollment in the Skilled Travelers (STEM) Enrollment Program was also highlighted as a safety measure.

“Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive important information and alerts from the U.S. embassy or consulate. Enrollment helps the U.S. embassy or consulate contact you or your emergency contact during an emergency,” they added.
